American Kennel Club's Swedish Vallhund
The Swedish Vallhund of the AKC’s Herding Group originated in Sweden. Other names for this breed is
known by are Swedish Cattle Dog, Swedish Shepherd, Vallhund and Vastgotaspets. This breed is also known as the
Vikings Dog and was used to herd cattle, catch vermin such as rats, and guard the homesteads all the Vikings.
Description Of The Swedish Vallhund
The Swedish Vallhund of the AKC’s Herding Group stands 12 to 16 inches tall at the withers and weighs from
25 to 35 pounds. This breed has a double coat, the outer coat is tight, harsh, and of medium length with a soft,
dense undercoat. The color of the coat can be gray, red yellow, red brown and gray brown. This breed does well in
apartments setting as long as it receives adequate daily exercise.
The Swedish Vallhund has no health problems to speak of and has a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years of age. As with
