Dogue de Bordeaux

American Kennel Club's Dogue de Bordeaux

Dogue de BordeauxThe Dogue de Bordeaux of the Working Group, Bordeaux Mastiff or French Mastiff or Bordeauxdog is a muscular, robust, vigorous and hardy breed of dog. This breed emanates from the Bordeaux region of France and was used, as far back as the 1400s, to guard European noble castles, pull carts or haul heavy objects and guard flocks. This breed was also used for hunting and herding. This breed is a short, stocky Molosser breed with a very large head. The massive head of this breed is a critical feature and should be wider than it is long. The circumference of the head, at the widest point is the same measurement as height to the withers and they have a dewlap on the skin of the neck. A full grown male will weigh around 110 pounds and have a life expectancy of 10 to 12 years of age. This breed is more muscular and wide than it is tall not like in English Mastiff, which is taller than wide. The front legs of this breed of the Working Group should be muscular and straight and the tail should start a thick and taper to a point. The ears, tail and dew claws should be left intact in this breed. This breeds coat is short, smooth and fine and varies in color from shades of fawn (light to copper red) and to mahogany (dark to brownish red) or orange with a black, brown or red mask. White markings are allowed on toes and chest but nowhere else on the dog. This breed, like all other purebreds has some health problems and you must research this animal before you buy!
