A Variety of Unique and Exotic Pets

In this section, I have a variety of different pets to talk about. Some of these animals I have owned. They were very, very special to me and my family. I had a difficult time with this segment, since I do not have most of these amazing pets any longer. But, they filled our home or our farm with joy and more often laughter. The first four pets that I talk about here, were ones we had on our tiny farm in Missouri or in our home here in Georgia. The last three are pets that I thought my visitors would enjoy learning about.

Ferret - a Stinky Bundle of JOY!

It’s been stated that ferrets were first domesticated by ancient Egyptians, but since there have not been mummified ferret remains found or any hieroglyphics on tomb walls, this does include that no wild pole-cats have been found in the area either. So, ferrets in Egypt is highly unlikely. Ferrets are related to the Pole-cat and it is not clear whether it is a domesticated form of the European pole-cat, the Steppe pole-cat, or even the United Kingdom pole-cat, where rabbits are considered a species plaguing farmers. With their long, lean bodies, ferrets are well equipped for getting down holes to chase rodents and rabbits out of their burrows. In 6 BC, Caesar Augustus sent ferrets or mongooses to the Balearic Islands to control the rabbit plague. But, this practice is illegal in several countries, so as the eco system will not be unbalanced by the ferrets. In the 17th century, ferrets were introduced to the New World and used in America at the start of World War II, to protect from rodents that tried to invade grain stores. Up until 1980s, ferrets were rare pets in the United States. Ferrets have become even more popular since 1996. Ferrets sleep 14 to 16 hours a day and are more active during dusk and dawn. When ferrets are awake, they are extremely active, energetic and curious. They investigate every bit of their surroundings. When a ferret plays, humans beware, their play involves hide and seek games, or a form of predator / prey game - where the ferret chases the human or the human chases the ferret. Ferrets hoard small objects in furniture, holes and crevices. These small items may include toys, keys, socks, silverware, sponges, paper rolls, video game controllers, pencils, glasses, dog food, jewelry and many other small items. Ferrets can become attached to special things like cat / dog squeaky toys and take them to their favorite hiding / sleeping spots. When ferrets get excited, they do what is called a “Weasel War Dance”, this is a dance of frenzied sideways hops. They also do a “Clucking Noise” commonly referred to as ‘Dooking’. This ‘Dooking’ is used in playing or expressions of happiness and is not threatening. In this expressive manner, the ferrets posture becomes rigid, with its mouth open wide. It’s head is moving from side to side along with the body, with it’s back arched. Ferrets often become so excited doing the “war dance”, that they hop into objects or trip over their own feet. Ferrets, like cats, can be litter trained. But, it is a good idea to have a few litter boxes around the house. Ferrets can be fed with commercial ferret foods or they can be fed with kitten or adult cat food, because of the high metabolism in ferrets, they need to be geared more towards a cat’s metabolism. Also, ferret owners need to be very “ferret house-hold” aware. Ferrets are curious little beings and can get into trouble anywhere and everywhere. So, with children, “ferret-proof” your home, your garage and your shed. Also, ferrets are fearless, purchase an H-harness to keep it safe on a leash while it is outside with you, so you won’t loose him / her in the bushes or in the road.

How to raise Dairy Goats

If you want to be married to your farm, buy a female bred milking Dairy goat. You will milk twice a day and supplement every other animal on the farm including humans, but not fowl. We fed my daughter on goats milk after my withered male goat ate poison-ivy and affected my chest by rubbing on me, so I could not breastfeed. After one year of feeding my daughter goats milk, our pediatrician/goat breeder advised us to take her off of the milk because she was gaining too much weight. So, We decided to purchase a calf from the Mennonites in Jamestown, Missouri. We raised the calf named "Money" and a piglet named "Eugene" on two female French Alpine Dairy Goat's milk supply. Hippity-Hoppity, Fun with Bunnies

In the middle ages, selective breeding of rabbits began when they were first treated as domesticated farm animals. Several new colors and sizes were being recorded by the 1500s. Now, there are many different domesticated breeds of rabbits, actually there are 47 rabbit breeds recognized by the American Rabbit Breeders Association in the United States. These breeds include: the English Angora, Lionhead, Netherland Dwarf, Holland Lop, Dutch, Flemish Giant, Havana, Silver Fox, Mini Lop, Satin and many, many more. Rabbit breeds, like dog breeds, are created by humans for different purposes at different times and with varying physical characteristics. Also, special care requirements and temperaments are for the different rabbit breeds. The most important component of a rabbits diet is hay, which is also the base to pelleted feeds. Some other necessary parts to a rabbits diet is Timothy hay, Orchard grass hay or an Oat hay blend. All these types of hay provides more fiber than other types of hay. Clean bowls for food and fresh water is required daily for a pet rabbit. Avoid seeds, nuts and corn, because a rabbit has a very sensitive digestive system. Also, avoid too many treats like apples, bananas, carrots and other sugary foods which can lead to rabbit obesity. Rabbits that live indoors can live between 9 to 12 years. Easter is the time when rabbits are the most popular pet, but this is also the time animal shelters receive rabbits as unwanted or neglected pets because that’s when rabbits were bought on impulse as Easter “gifts” , especially for children. Rabbits can be trained with voice commands and different patterns in the voice. Also, rabbits, like dogs and cats love to play with toys. They also enjoy playing games. Rabbits do chew on things like wires. So, be very careful of electrical wires to televisions, computers, lamps and other household appliance wires. You might to “Rabbit- (child) - Proof” your home, which you can find cord covers in hard-ware stores, department-stores or Baby Care Stores. Rabbits can be kept indoors or outdoors. While indoors, rabbits are protected from predators, temperature changes and outdoor parasites. Indoors, rabbits can be kept in a large cage or pen or to have the free run of the home, depending on the family and the personality of the rabbit. Rabbits can be safely housed outside in a few types of homes, these situations are called Runs, Hutches and Rabbitries.A Rabbitry is specially made for raising rabbits and mainly used by rabbit exhibitors or (rabbit fanciers) or breeders. A rabbitry could be a barn, shed, studio or other safe enclosure. These consist of electricity, running water, rodent - safe food storage for rabbit hay and food. Rabbits need to have a clean environment and their housing should be cleaned often with no build - up of feces or urine. Be sure to have fun and play with your Rabbit, he / she is part of the family and remember - they like games and toys just like other pets.

How to Care for and Raise Pet Birds

Pet birds are perfect pets for small dwelling, like apartments, small homes. Also people that are wanting intelligent pet companionship, but have minimal time and money to invest. Be aware of the special characteristics of the species of bird you are interested in. Research the breed, for health reasons and ask questions about price for your region. You want the best and most beautiful bird for your family, without any problems with grief. Remember, you can purchase your pet bird from a number of sources. These sources include: pet shops, private dealers, breeders or individual persons. Always make sure your pet birds health is your primary concern when you choose your new pet. Also, you want your pet bird to have a good disposition and temperament. This is always beneficial to you and your bird, so you don’t want to give up your special pet. Keeping your pet bird healthy at home is very important, so feeding the right diet is very important. The diet for pet birds can very slightly depending on the size of the bird and their native feeding habits. Offering a variety of foods is best, because it makes for more of a balanced diet. Purchasing seed from a pet shop is much more nutritious and even fresher than commercial seed. Pelleted foods are also available for pet birds. Greens are an all time favorite treat for your pet bird, but you need to be careful about your bird overeating their greens. Thoroughly wash all the fresh greens before feeding it to your bird.Washing removes soil, bacteria and contaminants that could be vary harmful to your bird. Backyard table greens should not have been treated with pesticides, fertilizers or insecticides. The healthier for you, the healthier for your bird. Also, make sure to keep the water fresh so no bacteria grows in the water dish from accidental seeds falling into the dish. Keep the cage bottom clean, either with paper towels or newspaper. Give your pet bird toys to play with, changing these out once in a while for a “change of pace”. They love to play too! And TALK TO YOUR BIRD OFTEN, they need to be acknowledged and human companionship with speech is a wonderful way to do this. Be patient with your young pet birds. They have to learn how to not bite you or tear up their cages and toys. Also, they need to learn how to associate with humans, not just their own bird kind. Young birds do learn fast, especially if they are born into your family. Handling the young bird often, and speaking softly to it, is a very good way to begin. Teaching the young ones to perch on your finger and again not biting, is the first step. But, always use their names while, gentle stroking their feathers on their heads works too.

Parrot- A Very Sociable and Intelligent Bird

Parrots are popular pets, because they are sociable and affectionate towards humans. Parrots, fall into the same category as other types of intelligent birds, these include crows, jays and magpies. The Parrots intelligence for imitating the human voice is this reason. Humans are amazed by the Parrots ability to talk, mimicking the human's voice, other animal's voices, and mechanical devices such as doorbells. Parrots are also prized for their beauty, with the variety of bright colors, types and sizes, they come in. Parrots are kept in a cage or in Aviaries. But it is not a surprise to see a Pet Parrot also allowed to stand on wooden stands or gyms, specially made for them. Pet Parrots are a species with many popular smaller types including Concures, Lovebirds, Lorikeets, Cockatiels, Budgerigars, Parakeets and more. Some of the larger Parrot types include Macaws, Amazons and African Greys. Taking care of a Parrot is a challenge, but get some good advice in these two E-book pet links

Magical Majestic Swans

Do you remember the story "The Ugly Duckling"? As we grew up we heard that story and loved the ending. But, to find out what that poor bird turns out to be- a prestigious "Swan". Swans are in many of our stories, including mythical ones: one of my all time favorite stories is "The Swan Princess", (I loved Princess Odette) and this story is related to the Ballet "Swan Lake". Also, in mythology , the story of "Helen of Troy" states Helen was conceived in a union of the almighty Zeus disguised as a Swan and Leda, Queen of Sparta. That's a beautiful story. There is an Irish legend of the children of Lir, about a stepmother transforming her children into Swans for 900 years. The Swan has been depicted on a commemorative Irish coin. Swan symbols are also found in many other religions and cultures, including Hindu and Norse. Something very interesting, in the United Kingdom, it is believed by the populous, that all Swans are the property of the Queen. It is stated that it is the Queen's right to ownership of Swans, is exercised and restricted to "unmarked Mute Swans" on open water on certain areas of the River Thames and some of its tributaries. Bearded Dragon- A Dragon with Spikey Whiskers

Children love Bearded Dragons, many reasons are because they are friendly, naturally calm, easy to get along with and relatively easy to care for. Bearded Dragons (also known as Beardies by those who breed and raise them) in captivity are one of the many other species of Agamid lizards. The genus "Pogona" describes seven species found in Australia which are bred and sold as pets. Most Bearded Dragons in captivity have flatten bodies and broad triangular heads. Males, when threatened expand their spiny pouch under their jaw and in hale air that puffs them up to make them appear larger. The pouch looks like a beard, giving them their name. Males and females are close in size, although some males have a larger head and a thicker tail base than the female. Mature males turn their throat poach black during courtship, showing dominance.
